Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, caused by HSV type 1 (HSV-1) and HSV type 2 (HSV-2), are highly prevalent worldwide. HSV-1 is primarily associated with oral herpes, while HSV-2 is the leading cause of genital herpes. More than 500 million people globally are estimated to be infected with HSV, and many cases remain undiagnosed due to asymptomatic or mild infections. However, HSV infections can lead to severe complications, including neonatal herpes, encephalitis, and an increased risk of HIV transmission.
With advancements in molecular diagnostic techniques, more effective methods for detecting HSV-1 and HSV-2 have been developed. The CDC recommends Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs), including real-time PCR, as the preferred method for HSV detection due to its high sensitivity and specificity.
